Centobin Law Office does not accept contested family law matters or family litigation. We do not represent parties in disputed divorce, parenting, custody, child support, spousal support, or family property proceedings where court litigation is required. Our family law services are intended for clients whose matters are uncontested, cooperative, or capable of being resolved by agreement without litigation. If a matter becomes contested and requires court proceedings, clients may need to retain separate family litigation counsel.
Child support in Alberta is calculated from the paying parent’s gross annual income, the number of children, and the parenting arrangement, using the Federal Child Support Tables. Centobin Law Office in Calgary works out the figure where parents agree on the income, records it in a separation agreement or consent order, and provides independent legal advice to a parent asked to sign one.

Three inputs produce the base figure, and they are not negotiable in the way other separation terms are: the payor’s income, the number of children, and how the parenting time divides. Agree those three and the table gives you the number.
Alberta has both provincial and federal guidelines, which produce the same table amounts. Which one applies depends on whether the support is settled as part of a divorce.
| Payor’s gross annual income | Monthly table amount |
|---|---|
| $30,000 | ~$264 |
| $40,000 | ~$362 |
| $50,000 | ~$466 |
| $60,000 | ~$575 |
| $80,000 | ~$735 |
| $100,000 | ~$896 |
| $150,000 | ~$1,264 |
The table amount covers ordinary day-to-day costs. Section 7 expenses sit on top of it and are normally shared in proportion to each parent’s income — which is why the agreement should say which ones are included and how receipts are exchanged.
An agreement that records only the monthly figure is the one that returns as a dispute. These are the terms worth settling while you still agree.
Support does not end automatically at 18. It generally continues while a child remains unable to withdraw from parental charge, and agreeing in advance what that will mean avoids the argument later.
Centobin Law Office will say at the first consultation whether your matter is one the firm can take. These are the situations where it is not.
Applying the Federal Child Support Tables to agreed income and the agreed parenting schedule, including the shared-parenting offset.
Setting the amount, Section 7 sharing, payment terms, and annual adjustment out in a separation agreement or consent order.
Reviewing a support term the other parent’s lawyer drafted and advising you on it before you sign.
Setting the arrangement up so an eligible order is updated administratively each year as incomes change.
No. The firm calculates support where the income figures are agreed, records the amount in an agreement or consent order, and provides independent legal advice before signing. Disputed income, imputed income applications, enforcement, and contested variations are litigation and belong with family litigation counsel.
The base amount comes from the Federal Child Support Tables and depends on the paying parent’s gross annual income, the number of children, and the province. On top of the table amount, parents share Section 7 expenses — child care, significant health costs, and extraordinary activities or education — usually in proportion to their incomes.
You can, but a figure materially below the table amount is the term most likely to be set aside, because child support is regarded as the child’s right rather than the parents’ to bargain away. If you have reasons for departing from the table, they need to be recorded in the agreement so the basis is clear.
Build an annual exchange of tax returns into the agreement, with the amount adjusted to the table figure for the new income. Alberta’s Recalculation Program can also update an eligible order administratively each year without a court application, which keeps an agreed arrangement agreed.
Not automatically. Support generally continues while a child remains unable to withdraw from parental charge — most often because they are in full-time post-secondary education, or because of illness or disability. It is worth settling in advance what will happen, rather than leaving it to be argued when the child turns 18.
At 40% of the time or more, the arrangement is shared parenting and support is calculated by offsetting each parent’s table amount rather than one parent paying the full figure. A schedule that sits near that threshold is worth checking carefully, because small changes to the calendar can change the number significantly.
If you and the other parent agree on income and the parenting schedule, Centobin Law Office can calculate the right amount and record it so it holds.
